Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Foss Toilet really re-use every flush?
Yes, every flush is reused, unlike your normal toilet, which uses clean drinking water every flush!
Does the Foss Toilet require a sewer or septic connection?
The Foss Toilet is a self-contained system that doesn’t discharge any liquid, converting toilet wastewater to clean, reusable water that is reused as flushwater. This means the Foss water care system only needs to be connected to electricity and an air vent, without needing a sewer connection or a septic leach field.
How is this system different from a composting or incineration toilet?
Unlike other off-grid toilets, this toilet system operates just like a typical residential toilet -- with water for flushing and minimal maintenance. Unlike these other systems, the Foss Toilet doesn’t require any consumable products, and a dry, safe sanitary solid needs to be removed only once or twice a year with regular use.
How much electricity does the Foss Toilet use?
The Foss Toilet uses about $40/month of electricity for continuous, full-time usage by two adults.
What’s the size of the Foss Toilet?
The Foss Toilet is compact and fits easily in an existing bathroom design, 36” wide x 60” tall x 14” deep behind the toilet seat.
What’s the usage capacity of the Foss Toilet?
The Foss Toilet is designed for up to 2 adult full-time continuous usage, and surge capacity for 4 adults full-time over a weekend and a 12-person half-day party.
What’s the price of the Foss Toilet?
The Foss Toilet price is aimed at $10,000 for an initial beta-testing product.
What stage of development are Foss Toilets currently in?
The Foss Toilet technology has been developed from an idea to the fully functioning prototype shown here over the past six years with researchers at Columbia University, Stanford University, and supported by the Gates Foundation. We are currently in the testing phase, logging over 2 years of operational stress testing and two months of second-party laboratory testing at Duke University’s Center for WaSH-AID.
As we continue refining the technology, we’re actively seeking new opportunities for early adoption.
